A Journey to Chicago: A Regione Veneto and European Union-Funded Adventure
This summer, our high school had the unique opportunity to participate in an extraordinary educational trip to Chicago, funded by the European Union. Thanks to a scholarship provided by the Veneto region, 25 students from our school embarked on this enriching experience, designed to improve our English and immerse us in American culture. The adventure began on August 25, 2024, when we departed from Marco Polo Airport in Venice.
Selection Process and Purpose
The 25 students who participated in the trip were carefully selected by an internal committee at our Italian school. The selection was based on several criteria: academic performance, involvement in extracurricular activities, and a letter written in English titled “Why I am the ideal candidate.” This process ensured that students were not only academically strong but also committed to learning beyond the classroom. The primary goal of the trip was to enhance our language skills while gaining a deeper understanding of American culture.
Preparation and Arrival
Prior to our departure, we took a comprehensive English language test to assess our levels. Based on the results, we were divided into different classes. Upon arriving in Chicago, we were welcomed by representatives from Kaplan, the language school that hosted us. We stayed with host families, each located in different parts of the city, giving us a unique opportunity to experience local life firsthand.
Daily Routine and Activities
The mornings were dedicated to intensive English classes at Kaplan, where we were grouped according to our language proficiency. While our classes varied, ranging from beginner to advanced levels, the afternoons were spent together participating in shared cultural activities. On our second day, for example, we explored the city’s famous Riverwalk and Millennium Park.
Throughout the trip, we experienced Chicago’s rich culture through various excursions. We visited The Field Museum, attended a baseball game between the White Sox and the Rangers and to see the cloud gate o Better know as Chicago bean. Other highlights included visits to the Art Institute of Chicago and the Garfield Conservatory, where we experienced the city’s artistic and natural beauty.
The Return: A Slight Hiccup
Our trip was originally scheduled to end on September 7, 2024. However, a mechanical issue with our airplane delayed our return. Although we arrived at O’Hare Airport as planned, we were informed that only part of the group could leave that evening. The rest of us, including the authors of this article, had to stay an additional day, eventually departing on September 8, 2024.
Reflecting on the Experience
This trip was more than just a chance to improve our English; it was an opportunity to grow as individuals. We learned to navigate a foreign city, adapt to new environments, and work together. Thanks to the European Union and the Veneto region, we gained invaluable cultural experiences and skills that will stay with us for a lifetime.
